NFPA 20

NFPA 20, issued by the National Fire Protection Association, is the standard for the installation of stationary fire pumps used to supply water to fire protection systems such as sprinklers and standpipes. Its primary purpose is to ensure that fire pumps provide reliable and adequate water flow and pressure during fire emergencies when the normal water supply is insufficient. The standard covers requirements for pump types (e.g., centrifugal, vertical turbine), drivers (electric or diesel), controllers, and associated equipment, as well as detailed guidance on pump room design, including accessibility, ventilation, drainage, fire protection, and protection against flooding or mechanical damage. NFPA 20 also specifies installation practices, suction and discharge piping arrangements, and performance acceptance testing to verify proper operation. Emphasis is placed on system reliability, redundancy, and continuous readiness, ensuring that fire pumps function effectively under emergency conditions and support overall fire protection system performance.
