NFPA 14

NFPA 14, issued by the National Fire Protection Association, is the standard for the installation of standpipe and hose systems designed to provide a readily accessible water supply for firefighting within buildings. It establishes requirements for system design, installation, and performance to ensure adequate water flow and pressure are available at hose connections for use by firefighters or trained occupants. The standard classifies standpipe systems into Class I (for fire department use), Class II (for occupant use), and Class III (combined use), and defines criteria for pipe sizing, hose outlets, pressure regulation, and system components. NFPA 14 also addresses system location, coverage, and integration with fire pumps and water supplies to ensure reliability during emergencies. Overall, it plays a critical role in supporting manual firefighting operations, especially in high-rise and large buildings, by ensuring that water can be delivered effectively to control and suppress fires.
